Daily Threads: Breaking Rules

{Gap Colorblock Teesimilar cardigan, similar skinny jeans, UO Suede Pump}

I recently heard Tim Gunn say under no circumstance should anyone ever wear cropped pants. He went on to explain that no matter what you look like (short or long legs) they will always make your legs look short and cut you off. If there's one person throwing out rules related to fashion that I'm going to listen to, it's going to be Tim Gunn. Stacy and Clinton are good, great really, but some of their rules, I just can't abide. Tim - he's the real deal. What he says goes.

Obviously I didn't listen to him today. Comfort beats all fashion rules. It was hot, so I cuffed my skinny jeans - I cuffed them to the point of looking cropped. And now, looking at the pictures, Tim was right. My sometimes awkwardly long legs look short and cut off. I don't like it. Next time I'm hot, my ankles will just have to suffer. End of story.

I've recorded my tutorial, so hopefully it should be up soon!

I heard Tim Gunn state that before, and I have to disagree. I love cropped pants, and I think your outfit is super cute! I have just started my first 30 for 30 challenge, and I love visiting your blog for inspiration!

I love Tim Gunn but that is one rule I'm going to have to ignore. Especially since sometimes I feel like I'm 10% torso 90% legs.

Or maybe I'm just justifying my recent purchase of red cropped pants.

But I don't think your legs look awkwardly short either in cuffed pants. Even on second look after you mentioned it!

I heard him say that too! Yesterday I thought of it as I was rolling my skinny jeans up. Too funny!
Love the pop of color in the shoes. :)

See, I think your legs look especially lovely and long.

I'm wearing green with orange heels in my post today too! It's such a lovely combo.

Hmm, I guess I don't see the issue with the cropped pant on you. The heels make it work, I think, but I also like the cuffed skinnies look with flats. I love cuffing my skinny jeans. It makes me feel a little modern-Audrey-Hepburn-ish. I'm definitely going to ignore this rule. :)

sorry timmy but you're off on that one.

free the ankles.

I can't wear cropped pants. I'm short so they just make me look shorter. I love the green sweater. The color makes me happy.

I follow my own fashion rules, and sometimes breaking other peoples fashion rules ends up with something fun

I think cropped pants are a tough style to wear, and Tim is right for a lot of people. However this outfit shows you CAN break fashion rules and look fab. You have long legs, a wide clean cuff and heels so the look totally rocks on you!

Tim Gunn is the best! However, I don't think your legs look that short. I love all the colours in your outfit, it looks so happy!

Okay so here's what I think (for whatever it's worth):

1. Your legs most certainly do not look short or cut off! They look stunning!
2. WHY do people think that shorter legs mean less attractive? I have short legs. I wear cropped pants because I think they're cute. Making my legs look longer doesn't necessarily mean that I look more (or less) attractive.
3. The color blocking in this outfit is fabulous and I adore those shoes!!!

I think you look adorable. Your legs are long enough that the cropped-pants curse doesn't apply! Jealous!

I don't care for that rule... I love cropped pants - but never TOO far above the ankle. I guess that is my version of the rule! You look fab - I love the green and red/coral combo!

forget the rule! you look awesome - love those shoes everytime you waer them. :)

I have to say, I'm with Tim on this one....but only because my legs are super short to start out with, and the addition of cropped pants makes them look positively hobbit-like.

I actually think it looks really cute on you!

God love Tim Gunn, but sometimes . . . well sometimes he's wrong. And you rock those cropped pants. I love the color combo of the cardi and your shoes!

I think that if a person has long slim legs (or makes them appear long with heels) cropped pants are totally chic!! I get what Tim's saying...and learned all about it in school, but the truth is if you have slender long legs visually cutting them off a bit is not going to make that big of a deal.

I love your bright cardi and shoes!!

I've heard him too! But I could not disagree more, I usually like his tips a lot and find them very helpful, but I think this is not the case, guess balancing the tops with the crops is the key! ... Sorry Tim We made this work! ha ha

I love Tim Gunn, but I'm still going to crop my pants! I always have to choose comfort to a certain extent!

And I love the way you mixed coral and green here. Super cute!

I disagree with you -- I don't think your legs look short at all! I can see how cropped pants could create that impression, but I think wearing heels with the cropped pants definitely counteracts any visual shortening that might be going on.

I agree with a lot of the posters above, Tim Gunn is great but sometimes I just can't agree with him. Capris work (just style safely) and not all skirts below the knee look dowdy (that's my biggest Tim Gunn pet peeve! midi skirts exist for a reason!)

Your legs look perfectly long!

nice color combo! You have great legs to pull off cropped pants. I am about 5'3'' and can't do it. :(

Liz said...

Oh Linley I don't think this makes your legs look any different! Love the color mixing in this outfit friend!

I think he has a point BUT I think that worn with heels and with great fitting skinny jeans it can work. A great example is your outfit today! Then again, I don't think you ever have to worry about your legs looking too short...lucky!

I think your cuffed jeans are cute. Your heel balance it out some. Plus when it's hot it's hot.

I love Tim, but I absolutely love the look of cropped jeans more. You look stunning love the green with those shoes!

I cant pull off a crop leg, because well... I am super short and carry all my extra weight in the "lower half" but I think that you are long and lean enough to totally pull off this look. I bet if you wore nude colored shoes it would remove that "cut-off" look. I think your outfit as is is super cute.

I dunno.. maybe I have an untrained eye but it looks great to me! I thought it accentuated your slenderness (in a good way).

I love your cardigan! The color is so nice and rich. This outfit is really cute. I'm usually not a fan of cropped pants (especially since most of them are too long to even be pants on me!), but I see why you rolled them up. It looks cute regardless!

I loved your interview on Katy's blog (Modly Chic). I'm really glad she featured you and I discovered your blog! It's fabulous! New follower :)

I normally think Tim Gunn is the Holy Grail of Style too (and agree with 98% of his suggestions), but you go on with the skinny cropped jeans! You're so tall and thin that it looks fabulous on you (while I look like I'm pretending to be a tree stump).

Sarah said...

I love me some cropped pants. I do it way too much, but I think this works for you. I'm loving how you mixed your colors!

Ashley {hudson's happenings} said...

Pssssh...well obviously Mr. Gunn has never seen you rock the crop. ;)

dani said...

I've heard Stacy & Clinton say that, too! Their reasoning was that it makes you look "like you don't care" because you got pants in which you didn't have to worry about hemming them. I'm 5'2" so it's hard for me to buy that! Haha

Anyway, I think you look pretty adorable - but what do I know? ;)

The cuffed with those shoes looks adorable, when its hot, you have to do what you have to do. I just bought these shoes a few days ago, good to know they look good on.
