Daily Threads: I Need a Horse

{top: old navy | pants: tj maxx | boots: steve madden | necklace: F21}

In my efforts to throw together a simple outfit, I walked out of my closet as an equestrian. I just need a cap and a blazer, oh, and a horse. And although this looks like a simple ensemble, it's not so simple to take off while out shopping. Necklace over shirt + socks over pants = annoying in the dressing room. Trying on pants over a pair of pants isn't as easy as it seems - and you leave the store with a pair two sizes too big.

I have a love hate relationship with shopping - some days everything works out, other days... nothing. We went to a few stores last night and one was the Gap. I love the Gap - their simple, but trendy style appeals to me. The husband walked out with two pair of pants, a shirt, and some man perfume. I walked out with nothing. I tried on two pair of pants - in the same size as these (see how nicely they fit?). One pair was falling off of me and the other I could barely button (the laying down method always pulls through!). It drives me nuts. Does this happen to you? Ever? Please say yes.

  2. I've totally had that experience while shopping. Sometimes I love everything in a store, other times everything is terrible and I don't like anything. Or nothing fits right.

Also, add an Hermes scarf and you're Betty Draper. The equestrian look is adorable!

  5. I love this equestrian look on you and the necklace totally glams it up! And I agree that I usually have to wear the simplest of outfits when shopping. Otherwise the dressing room us such a pain!

  6. I have totally had that experience while shopping, so frustrating! And I hate trying things on so much that I just buy and try stuff on at home and return if necessary.

By the way, you are probably the most glamorous equestrian I've ever seen. LOVE that necklace.

  7. Inconsistent sizing is always the worst! Especially those stores that do vanity sizing. So annoying!!

And I totally hate shopping in non-shopping friendly clothes. I didn't think we were going to the mall yesterday and wore a button-up underneath a button-up cardigan... and I found this button-up denim shirt at H&M on sale.. but the thought of un-doing SO MANY buttons and then having to re-do them all again afterward was so unappealing so I put it back. Now I'm totally regretting it, and have to make an extra trip back to the mall to see if it's still there! :(

  8. Inconsistent sizing is AWFUL. I work at Old Navy, and I can tell you from experience that the Gap brand is the worst about sizing. I go to Gap and I'll have to try on several different sizes of everything just to find something that works--annoying! But I love the Gap--and my discount--so I make it work.

    And this outfit is fab-u-lous.

  9. i love your equestrian look! not only can you pull it off so well, but you make it look so clean cut and effortless.

i feel your pain on the pant sizing weirdness issues. i really hate the inconsistency between sizes IN THE SAME STORE that makes it almost impossible to not leave without being frustrated.

  10. i love this look. very ralph lauren! : )

  11. My shopping always goes like this: When I have money to spend, I find nothing. When I have no money, I love EVERYTHING and it ALL fits! Ugh.

  12. i sometimes have that same problem with pants...so annoying! but your outfit today is super cute, love the necklace!!

  13. Literally, this happens to me every time I try something on. And I work at the Gap. Some days are hits there, and some days are misses. Hopefully you have more hits than misses :)

  14. It definitely happens to me! Especially with their jeans (which I love). But, I've learned my lesson... each pair fits differently. So, I buy for fit not size.

You look super cute! This outfit shows why simple and classic is so, er, classic.

    Leaving the House in THIS?!?!

  15. The whole pants not fitting the same even when it's the same brand happens to me all the time! I hate it! I guess it's different styles that do it, but it's obnoxious! I have 3 pairs of Levi's jeans. Two are the same size and one is a size bigger. The bigger size is the smallest of them all! I don't understand! I guess because one is 505, one is 515, and the other is 535 that they fit different? I don't know but it drives me nuts!

  16. Yes, that dressing room experience HAS happened to me - I think it all depends on where the pants are made (according to what I've read/heard).

And I totally hear you on the dressing for shopping - the easy outfits are never that easy to take off and try stuff on! :)

  17. Ugh! YES! ... Hate when garments are not true to size, makes my self-esteem go 100 point lower! ... It rarely happens at Gap cause their cuts fit my shape very good but it's so dissapointing when it happens specially when I really like the pants. Don't forget to post pictures of your horse when you get it , haha.

  18. Lovin' the equestrian look! I made a similarly poor choice in shopping attire this weekend. I wound up trying on skirts and dresses over my jeans. Let's just say that I will be returning a lot of items, lol.

I hate when that happens while shopping...so annoying!!

  20. I always plan out my shopping outfits if possible. No hairdos, they get messed up taking shirts on/off. No necklaces, belts, or shoes that buckle or tie. Skirts with leggings so I can try on pants/skirts/dresses over them (especially when thrift shopping). There are other rules, but usually I don't follow them and having the same problems you did.

  21. Oh yeah there are definitely days when shopping just seems like an impossible task to me. That's mostly why I don't really like shopping in malls and stuff as much as I used to. I really like thrifting and I used to love ModCloth becuase they had measurements. I trust my measurements much more than modern sizing... because it's so bad even within one brand!

Also you'd fit right in at hollins in that outfit! You just need a puffy green vest that says Hollins Riding. hehe

  22. I went shopping the other day with a similar outfit on + a blazer and it was miserable. I totally cut everything short because I couldn't deal with the thought of messing with my socks one more time.

  23. I love this outfit! Especially with the necklace. I have the worst time with inconsistent sizing too, I'll range anywhere form an x-small to a large in the same store sometimes! Drives me crazy.

  24. I once asked a Gap SA for help on sizing and she found 5 pairs in the same size and told me to try them all on! Said it will all fit differently and boy was she right. Love this simple look on you, equestrian-esque but cute!

  25. i kind of hate shopping! i always seem to wear the most complicated outfits when I go try stuff on, and spend most of the time re-tucking and putting all the layers back on. it can be so frustrating!

anyway, i love your 'equestrian' outfit! you're so cute!

    ReplyDelete
  26. This is definitely a cute, chic, but simple outfit. Even if it is not simple enough for trying on clothes. At least you looked cute while you shopped though!

  27. Love your equestrian look!! The pants are so cute...and something I could never pull off! Your legs look miles long!

& you would be totally cute on a horse. :)

  28. Linley, I really enjoy your blog. I love to look at all these outfits and think back to when we used to hang out and you just wore jeans, a studded belt, chuck taylors and a t-shirt. ;) I've barely grown out of that myself! You inspire me to be more stylish.. which is something I've told myself to do for years, but I don't have the money to shop. I know that's a lame excuse, because I am always go thrifting, but money is even too tight for that.
If I ever become stylish, my blogs will be for those low-budget beauties! ;) hehe

  29. i have definitely been there with the shopping, and the equestrian look! i actually do have a riding cap that tops it all off :)

  30. I have exactly that kind of problem with shopping all the time! Sizes are never the same twice, even in the same store and, worse still, I often find beautiful things only when I can't afford them- and nothing when there's money in my pocket! I love this equestrian look, though, especially the necklace over the turtleneck. It's the perfect accent :)

  31. YES! You're not alone, dear!
I really like this look on you. Simple and chic. You DESERVE a horse!

  32. YES it totally does.
easy to take on and off outfits are crucial for successful shopping, otherwise you get so fed up with your socks and boots that you inevitably leave with nothing. oh well--good for the budget!

  33. You DO need a horse! Very classic and chic darling!

  34. This happens to me all the time. On my birthday I went shopping and had some good money to spend and I found 2 shirts. :/
However, if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. I've never stopped shopping. It's way too fun! :)

  35. oh, i can so relate to this after yesterday! at gap i bought two skirts. one was a size 0 and one was a size 6. really?!

  36. Hehe...there is a girl who works at "my" Forever 21 who always compliments me on my outfits and tells me I look like I've been horseback riding, very stylishly. I don't ride horses. It's really nice but a bit awkward.
